The 7.7 Jap is loaded using brand-new PPU brass, a Speer 180 gr Hot-Cor bullet, and 42.5 grains of Vihtavuori n140 powder (+- 0.02grain with autotrickler and fx120i scale). My testing with two Type 99 short rifle indicates that this load is safe and produces a muzzle velocity of approximately 2300-2350 fps, which is very close to the original WWII Japanese military specification. Since Arisaka rifles use Metford-type rifling, flat-based bullets often provide the best accuracy in these rifles.
The reason I chose to load 7.7 Jap is simple: I want to keep these historic rifles alive. There are still many Arisaka rifles in Canada, but because factory ammunition is scarce and often unavailable, most owners rarely have the opportunity to shoot them. I believe these rifles deserve more than sitting in a safe as display pieces—they should be experienced and appreciated the way they were originally intended.
