This is a revolver made by the famous French gunsmith Eugene Lefaucheux, who in 1854 made the first ever revolver with a self-contained metallic cartridge with the single action pinfire M/1854 revolver. This was a massive step up from muzzle loading and percussion revolvers which are much slower and less consistent compared to pre-loaded brass cartridge rounds. This single AND double action revolver looks to be a variant of the M/1864 series in 12 mm pinfire, and has the added benefit of a solid frame with top strap for structural integrity. These types of revolvers were used in many conflicts and military service including the American civil war! As a pre-1898 antique this revolver can be owned without any registration or license. Pinfire rounds can still be purchased (e.g. https://aaronnewcomer.com/pinfire-ammo-for-sale/)

This is a beautifully engraved revolver, and the surface still has a shiny silver finish. It has been taken care of over its 150 years + on our planet with only scattered surface pitting and dings, and all of the screw heads are still going strong. The cylinder has the most ornate engravings and is exceptionally clean. The hard wood (possibly ebony) grips show engraving and scrollwork similar to the frame, and are still very solid. It reads "E. LEFAUCHEUX / BREVETE" on the barrel but otherwise has no visible markings. The 6" barrel still has defined rifling despite oxidation throughout. The knurling on the hammer is still strong also.

Mechanics are about 95%. The action is fully functional in single and double action operation, while the cylinder rotates smoothly and indexes reliably. The cylinder locks up rock solid upon firing. The reason I dropped 5% is because it has a quite heavy trigger. The ejector works as intended, and the original lanyard ring is still present which is a plus.

This is a unique revolver from a bygone era, and can still be bought and used in Canada (Antiques are exempt from the ludicrous handgun laws of pretty boy JT).
