These rifles were used in several conflicts including in Algeria, and in the The French Indochina War, also known as the First Indochina War, was a conflict fought between France and the Vietnamese nationalist and communist forces, primarily the Viet Minh, from 1946 to 1954. This war was a major factor in the eventual division of Vietnam and the outbreak of the Vietnam War, and were the French main battle rifle up to 1979.
The MAS-49/56 rifle has a rear sight that is adjustable for both windage and elevation. This means the sight can be moved horizontally to correct for wind and vertically to adjust the point of impact at different ranges. It is not a fixed, simple iron sight, and it's also not a tangent sight. Instead, it has a calibrated dial that allows for precise adjustments.
