U.S. Springfield Model 1895 Krag saddle ring carbine . possible “Rough Riders”

Marked 1895 And truly is a 1895 Carbine SN#27159

YES there is 1895 marked carbines !   They are very rare ! links below show other examples and show that they are marked simply as "1895" and not "Model 1895"  like the later 1896  marked "model 1896"

Reference shows that carbines within serial range ~27,010-28,995 were “in the range of” the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry. so  possibly A  (“Rough Riders”)  rifle from Theodore Roosevelt Calvary unit 

This is an early variation of the 1896/95 carbine of which only  ! 1,378 !   were manufactured and 1000 early carbines  where sold to the “Rough Riders” unit ..  . The left side of the receiver is marked "1895.", "U.S./SPRINGFIELD ARMORY." and "27159". The front sight is a fixed blade with the rear an adjustable carbine style rear sight calibrated to 2,000 yards marked with "C". Mounted on a smooth straight grip stock with finger grooves on the forend, cut saddle ring,  a smooth steel buttplate with trap.

Saddle ring is cut off, and Mag cutoff is missing 

Has rear sight protector barrel band for early carbines 

Correct rear sight marked with " C "

Correct but plate 

Correct  sight protector 

Correct serial # range 

Correct front sight  

correct single locking lug bolt (only on early pre 1896 models)

Top hand-guard is cracked with old repair job (solid) old fix 

The 1895 models where  prototype versions and very little exist  even less in the carbine 

This rifle was clearly Used as a hunting rifle for a long time 

Bore is shinny but worn would  work good with .309 .310 bullets  30-40 krag
