This is an antique American Civil War Colt Model 1861 Special Rifled Musket. This is a percussion rifle and has a 40” rifled barrel chambered for .58  caliber. The sights are flip up leaf sights giving this rifle an effective range of up 500 yards. The lock is marked forward of the hammer in 3 lines “ U.S. / COLT’S PT F. A. MFG CO / HARTFORD, CT”. Rear of the hammer is marked 1863 making this an 1863 made rifle. The barrel is marked “V / P / eagle head” although the eagle head is no longer clear. The top of the butt is marked “U S”.  The stock has a light amount of dings with a small chip on the left side over the trigger.  Mechanically in fine working condition with a strong action.  With the Civil War in full swing in the 1860’s the Union Army was having trouble keeping their troops supplied and so a contract was given to Colt to produce rifles, of which 75000 were delivered between 1861 and 1865. This Colt rifle is a really interesting and beautiful piece of history that would be a great addition to any collection.
