Tingle .45 - number 1020
Robert Glenn Tingle (1925 - 1978) owned and operated Tingle Mfg. of Shelbyville Indiana, which made a number of different guns. They also made a Hawken which this seems to resemble.
His designs were different than other manufacturers of the time and that’s what makes his designs so interesting. Instead of a cheek rest protruding from the stock he hollowed it out and that brought your eye in line with the sights. The lock mainspring common on other rifles was instead a very strong and reliable coiled spring. The rear sight is not dovetailed into the barrel but is attached with screws and the threaded breech plug has a socket (1/4” hex) to allow periodic removal. You do need to set the trigger first to lock the hammer back to fire, unusual but effective.
Full disclosure; when the barrel is removed the stock underneath appears to have been milled too deep and the lock mechanism is partially visible. This doesn’t seem to affect the operation of the lock at all. It’s not a beater rifle at all and in good condition to shoot, it’s just not pretty like a Pedersoli but has some interesting history.
It functions and shoots well, I am just thinning the herd. Look up Tingle rifles for some background on this interesting gunsmith, he certainly made a mark. This is number 1020.
