BSA Commercial No.1 Mk III Target Rifle

This rifle is an original Birmingham Small Arms (BSA) Commercial No.1 Mk III, manufactured to full British military specifications but intended for the civilian and target shooting market rather than military service.

Unlike standard military-issued SMLE rifles, commercial examples were not accepted into British government service and therefore typically lack the familiar Crown and Royal Cypher markings found on War Office contract rifles. Instead, these rifles were produced by BSA using the same high-quality manufacturing standards and were sold to rifle clubs, competitive marksmen, Commonwealth organizations, and private purchasers.

During the inter-war years, Service Rifle competition—particularly at the famous Bisley ranges in England—required rifles built to military specifications. BSA filled this demand by producing commercial No.1 Mk III rifles that duplicated the military pattern while often exhibiting a higher level of finish than wartime production rifles.

Serial number 67323 falls within the range of commercial BSA production and represents one of the comparatively uncommon civilian-built SMLE rifles that have become increasingly desirable among collectors.
