C-I-L Model 402 Hudson Bay Company 300th Anniversary 12GA

For sale is a unique piece of Canadian sporting history: a C-I-L Model 402 single-shot break-action 12-gauge shotgun, produced in connection with the Hudson’s Bay Company’s 300th Anniversary in 1970.

The shotgun was manufactured in Brazil by Companhia Brasileira de Cartuchos (CBC) and sold under the Canadian C-I-L name. What makes this particular example interesting is the commemorative Hudson’s Bay Company markings. One side of the receiver is prominently marked “1970,” while the opposite side is marked “Hudson’s Bay Company – Incorporated 2nd May 1670.” The year 1970 marked 300 years since the incorporation of the Hudson’s Bay Company.

Specifications include a 12-gauge, 2¾” chamber, full choke, single-shot break-action and external hammer. It has a traditional wood stock and fore-end. The barrel is marked “Made in Brazil by Companhia Brasileira de Cartuchos, Santo André, Est. S. Paulo” along with the gauge, chamber and proof markings. Serial/production number is 101738.

The C-I-L Model 402 was a simple and dependable utility shotgun sold in Canada, with the basic design also appearing under CBC and other names. This example stands apart from the standard Model 402 because of its Hudson’s Bay Company 1670–1970 commemorative markings, making it an interesting firearm for someone collecting C-I-L firearms, Hudson’s Bay memorabilia or Canadian sporting history.

Condition is as pictured. This is an approximately 56-year-old firearm and shows honest use and age. There is finish loss, patina and surface spotting on the receiver, along with normal wear to the barrel and wood. The commemorative markings remain clear and easily readable. The wood presents quite nicely for its age. It has not been refinished and retains the character expected of an older working shotgun.
