8x57 IR (JR): This is the original, older version. It uses a .318-inch (8.08mm) diameter bullet. It was designed for the original bore specifications of the 1888 Commission Rifle.
NOT to be confused with the JRS
8x57 JRS (IRS): The "S" stands for Spitzgeschoss (pointed bullet) and indicates a larger, modern diameter of .323-inch (8.22mm). This version is standard for modern 8mm Mauser rifles.
Generally for the Mauser 8mm Double Rifle. A few Mannlicher's and such also used them.
