This is a antique U.S. Government Contract Asa Waters Flintlock Pistol. This has a 8-1/2” round barrel .54 calibre that has U.S. markings along with the inspector marking “JA” belonging to John Avis. The lock plate reads “A. WATERS/MILBURY.MS./1837”. There are 2 inspectors cartouche on the left side of the stock which are still very fine. One reads “HKC” for the inspector Henry K. Craig and the other reads “JCS” for the inspector John C. Stebbins. On the underside there is what seems to be a very old initial carving reading “NJ/1”64” otherwise the stock is in very good condition with a few small dings. The swivel functions as it should and the mechanics are crisp.
Asa Waters produced these pistols from 1836 to 1844 with military use lasting until the early years of the American Civil War. The model 1836 was their first pistol to be marked A. WATERS on the lock plate with previous models being marked ASA WATERS. The model 1836 was the last flintlock pistol to receive military contracts with most units being converted to percussion making this a true survivor to still be in its original configuration. This pistol would make a beautiful addition to any antique or military collection.
