This is a antique Colt model 1851 Navy percussion .36 caliber revolver. This has a 7-1/2” octagon barrel. The cylinder shows shows 30-40% of the naval battle engravings. The grips have a small piece missing at the bottom of each side which should be visible in the photos. They also have a number of handling dings. This revolver doesn’t have any original finish and has been cleaned to gun metal grey. Matching serial numbers are found on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and grip strap. The barrel wedge and cylinder are numbered to other guns. Mechanically very strong with proper timing, strong springs and good lockup.
Colt produced around 215000 1851 Navy revolvers from 1850 to 1873 with this one being made in 1868. The 1851 was one of Colts most popular percussion revolvers and was the preferred sidearm for many lawmen and outlaws. Wild Bill Hickok and Ned Kelly were both said to prefer their .36 caliber 1851’s. 1851’s always display beautifully and would make a great addition to any antique firearm collection.
