The Hopkins & Allen XL Navy belongs to a class of large-frame, single-action revolvers built to compete directly with Colt Single Action Army and the Smith & Wesson Model 3.
Hopkins & Allen is often remembered for mass-producing small, inexpensive pocket pistols ( called "Suicide Specials" The XL series was different. It was a line of high-quality, full-sized service handguns that showed how excellent the company’s engineering could be.
Introduced in 1877 and manufactured until 1885, the large-frame "XL No. 8" - Army and Navy were a robust, solid-frame design.
