In the early 2000s Crossman developed their Nitro Piston technology — a sealed gas-piston system that replaced traditional steel coil springs. It delivers smoother cocking, significantly less recoil and noise, better consistency across temperature changes, and longer lifespan. The MTR77NP (the “NP” stands for Nitro Piston) was introduced in 2013 as part of Crosman’s tactical “MTR” (Modern Tactical Rifle) line. It was designed to appeal to shooters who love the AR-15 platform but want an easy-to-shoot, maintenance-friendly, non-firearm alternative for plinking, backyard practice, or small-game hunting.
