This is an original Lee-Enfield No.5 Mk I “Jungle Carbine”, one of the most distinctive and collectible British service rifles of the post–Second World War period. Designed as a lightweight, shortened version of the No.4 rifle, the No.5 features a reduced barrel length, flash hider, and lightened receiver, giving it its well-known handling characteristics.
This example has matching serial numbers on the receiver and bolt, confirming original pairing. The magazine is force-matched, which is commonly encountered on service-used No.5 rifles and is typical for this model.
A key highlight of this rifle is the bore condition. The bore is in excellent shape, with very sharp, well-defined rifling visible throughout. The rifling remains deep and crisp, indicating minimal wear for a rifle of this age. This is a standout feature and is clearly shown in the close-up bore photos.
The rifle retains correct military configuration, including proper sights, flash hider front sight assembly, and correct furniture. All major mechanical components are present and intact.
Condition Notes
The following points are noted for full transparency:
- The buttplate material shows age-related deterioration consistent with long-term storage and service use (see photos). This is a common issue on No.5 rifles and is cosmetic in nature.
- Due to age-related wear, the magazine does not reliably retain cartridges. This issue is caused by a worn magazine follower and can be corrected by replacing the follower only. The magazine body and other components remain intact.
Aside from the above, the rifle is mechanically complete and functional.
This is a solid and honest example of a genuine No.5 Mk I Jungle Carbine, offering excellent bore quality and correct configuration, suitable for collectors, Lee-Enfield enthusiasts, or those looking to complete a proper No.5 setup.
