According to the Treaty of Versailles, long arms were restricted in German military. So they “developed” this “Carbine Version” of Mauser 98 and converted lots of WWI GEW 98 to such configuration:
Replaced the roller coaster rear sight to rectangular ladder rear sight which similar to the later WWII 98K style.
Use a drop down bolt handle, and make a cut on the wood stock to make space for it.
This rifle is built by a rare seen maker SUHL in 1917. Serial number mismatched. Barrel number is remarked matching. No finish on receiver which is correct for some WWI GEW98. Barrel and trigger guard blued finish in good condition. No rust or heavy pitting found. Wood was applied varnish and a Spanish flaming bomb cartouche on buttstock. No crack or major damage I can see. Imperial German cartouche still visible. I haven’t shot it but action works well. Bore is worn with some rifling left. It is pretty clean though. Comes with origin leather sling. See all details in Flicker album. It represents very interesting history and uncommon transition period example. Asking $1750, shipping on buyer’s expense.
