Marlin 1888 44-40, Ultra Rare in this condition, U.S. Antique.

This is a scarce Model 1888 Marlin Rifle with the top-eject action.   Marlin manufactured (1888-1890) just 4,800 of these before adopting the Model 1889 rifle with the side-eject bolt and frame.   Both the 1888 and 1889 models were designed by L.L. Hepburn of Colton, New York...who previously worked for Remington Arms.   Model 1888 rifles don't turn up very often and seldom in such nice condition, mostly these were working guns and saw hard use.   This is only the second one i have owned since i started collecting 40 plus years ago.

This one has a standard 24" octagon barrel with full magazine and crescent butt plate in caliber 44-40.   The original cost of this rifle back in 1889 was around $19.50.   I believe only around 2000 were made chambered in 44-40, the rest were in 38-40 and 32-40.

Sporting an excellent bore, good solid wood with no significant cracks or chips, just regular expected use.  85 - 90 % plus original blue, mechanically perfect with a few buggered screws, easily changed should you decide to do so.  A very nice, rare, collector grade rifle.
