- Mauser 98 action sporterized rifle.
- The action was manufactured at the Spandau Armoury in 1913.
- The crown proof mark on the top of the receiver indicates the “Royal Cipher” of the reigning Kaiser and King of Prussia (Wilhelm II in 1913).
- Chambered in 30-06.
- A Weaver 2.5 power scope is fitted with Weaver rings and mounts.
- The rifle is fitted with a 1903 Springfield 24 inch barrel, which was manufactured by Remington Arms in January, 1944.
- The front sight has been removed, as evidenced by the non-blued ring near the muzzle.
- The crown shows no signs of wear.
- The barrel also has the “Flaming Bomb” proof mark which indicates that it has passed final US military inspection and was accepted into service by the US government.
- The trigger guard is original to a Gew 98 action, as it has the small “parade sling swivel hole” in the front of the trigger guard. For parade use, it was designed to allow a soldier to quickly detach the front end of their leather sling from the barrel band and clip it directly to the trigger guard. This pulled the rifle closer to the body, keeping the sling out of the way for marching and ceremonies.
- The bolt has the standard three position safety; however with the scope mounted, only two positions are of use.
- The stock is of figured walnut in the Monte Carlo style.
- The wood furniture shows some wear and there is a small chip on the right front of the stock.
- The stock is fitted with a red rubber recoil pad with a black line spacer.
-
Rifling shows some wear but remains defined.
