This 1955 custom build was created by Canadian artist and gunsmith Harold L Marks of Quaco, New Brunswick. Winchester serial number search says the action was built in 1951. The "A" in the serial number signals a strengthened receiver. The receiver is signed by the gunsmith November 1955. This was built as a light sporter for varminting and small deer and antelope in the American southwest when Mr. Marks was stationed at Fort Sill, OK. It weights 5 lbs 4 ounces, unloaded. It sports a bright 24.5 inch octagonal barrel with good crown and bright bore; driftable front sight; adjustable buckhorn rear sight with an adjustable peep sight insert; removable magazine; original sling attachments and strap sling; heavily engraved magazine plate, trigger guard and hand grip cap, plus additional engraving on the receiver; traces of gold plating remain near the trigger guard, front sight, rear sight and safety. The walnut is nicely figured and engraved with very few safe kisses. The magazine is present; the bolt is missing, but replacement Model 43 full bolt assemblies in .22 Hornet can be purchased from gun parts dealers. As with any bolt replacement, you should get a qualified gunsmith to check the headspace before firing it - it's not a difficult or expensive procedure, but it will be necessary to ensure the gun is safe. The price has been reduced accordingly. This is a highly shootable, finely made sporting arm by a regionally significant Canadian artist. Pick up in Saint John New Brunswick or safe, fully ensured shipping for $120 to most addresses.
