According to my research, this rifle was manufactured in Budapest as an M95 Carbine and was part of the "z-block" batch of rifles, assembled post-armistice between 1918-1921 for war reparations or police use following the defeat of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in WWI. This is indicated by the z-suffix serial number on the receiver. It has some features of a factory-built cavalry carbine, including side sling swivels and a short rear sight leaf.
This rifle was upgraded to the M95/30 conversion standard in the 1930's and re-chambered for the more powerful 8x56mmR spitzer bullet before WWII. It appears to have received a new barrel at that time as well, evidenced by a slightly different font on the barrel's serial number. The receiver, barrel, bolt, and stock are matching numbers. The front barrel band is not matching.
This straight-pull carbine is in excellent condition throughout. I put 10 rounds through this rifle and they were on target at 100 yards. Everything is smooth and functions flawlessly. Asking $875 for this beautiful piece of Austro-Hungarian history. I prefer a local sale, but I am willing to ship on the buyer's dime, anywhere in Canada for $950 shipped. Will also consider trades for other WWI or WWII era rifles +/- cash if needed.
