Key Details

  • Model Name: Officially designated as the "United States Rifle, caliber .30, Model of 1917". It is often referred to as the M1917 Enfield or P17.
  • Manufacturer: Produced by the Eddystone plant, which was a subsidiary of Remington located in Eddystone, Pennsylvania.
  • Production Date: The high serial number indicates it was manufactured very late in the production run, around November 1918. The Armistice ending World War I occurred in November 1918, meaning this rifle may have seen little to no active service in Europe during that conflict.
  • Caliber: It is chambered for the U.S. standard .30-06 Springfield cartridge.
  • Significance: The M1917 was the primary rifle used by the American Expeditionary Forces during WWI, with approximately three-quarters of U.S. troops carrying one by the time of the Armistice.
