The Swiss Vetterli Model 1871 is a bolt-action rifle that was a significant advancement in military firearms technology at the time of its introduction. It combined the tubular magazine design of the American Winchester Model 1866 with a bolt featuring two opposed rear locking lugs, making it a more reliable and efficient repeater than previous designs. The Vetterli was the first repeating rifle widely adopted for military service and was the first to feature a self-cocking action and a small caliber bore. It has a 11-round tubular magazine located under the barrel. Adopte   by the Swiss military in 1869, with the M1871 eliminating the loading gate cover.
