Bought a brand new Savage 64 .22LR from Kai. The rifle itself is fine and runs well once the correct magazine is used.
The issue was that I was given a Mossberg 702 Plinkster 10-round magazine instead of a Savage 64 magazine. I didn’t realize this at first (I’m a newer shooter compared to his 40 years of shooting experience, so I trusted his judgment and didn’t question it at the time), and I was having constant feeding problems at the range—I couldn’t even get a single round to feed properly.
I contacted Kai about the issue and he was polite, but told me the feeding problems were common with the Savage 64 and would usually improve after some break-in and cleaning. That explanation made sense, since many Savage 64s do have minor feeding issues early on, so I accepted it and didn’t suspect the magazine at the time.
Later, another shooter at the range noticed I was struggling and came over to help. He pointed out that the magazine looked different and suggested I double-check it. I looked online and saw that Savage 64 magazines do look different from the one I had. At that point, I wasn’t confident whether the Savage 64 magazine shown online would actually fit my rifle. Since I trusted Kai, I assumed the magazine he gave me was correct and worried that the ones online might be a newer version that wouldn’t work with my gun. I reached out to Kai again to ask if I could return the rifle so he could take a look or fix the issue, but he declined.
After that, I took the rifle and magazine to a gun store. They confirmed I was using the wrong magazine. I bought a proper 20-round Savage 64 magazine, and the feeding issues disappeared completely.
While I understand that it may not have been intentional—this could have been a packaging mistake—the part that disappointed me was how the issue was handled. Once it was clear the problem was caused by an incorrect magazine, Kai did not acknowledge the mistake, instead insisting it was just a different “generation” or version of the magazine. Being told the problem was due to break-in and cleaning was misleading.
I’m satisfied with the rifle itself, but the response and attitude once the issue was identified left a bad impression. Being blamed for inexperience rather than having the problem acknowledged makes me hesitant to do further business.
Very easy FTF buy. As promised, the seller got back to me as soon as his initial sale didn't work out. He was extremely helpful and did the verification in quick order. Buy with confidence !
