9N235 Russian Submunition

The Russian 9N235 (9H235) is a high-explosive (HE), fragmentation, anti-personnel (AP) submunition that has been used in the 2022 Ukraine-Russia conflict. The submunition has a nose point-detonating (PD), direct impact 9Z246Mbv fuze with a 2 min self-destruct (SD) timing. The 9N235's explosive composition contains approximately 312 g of what is believed to be A-IX-10 explosive composition, consisting of 95% RDX. The submunition contains pre-formed fragmentation consisting of pieces of chopped steel rods. These fragments come in two sizes: Smaller fragments (nominally weighing 0.75 g) are mainly intended to injure and kill personnel. Larger fragments (nominally 4.5 g) are intended to damage lightly armored vehicles and materiel. Each 9N235 contains approximately 96 of these larger fragments and 360 of the smaller ones. The 9N235 submunitions have been documented in Ukraine during the 2022 to present conflict, where these submunitions play a significant role in the ongoing conflict, causing devastating impacts on civilians and infrastructure.
