The Sai is a traditional Okinawan weapon with a rich history and distinctive appearance. Although commonly associated with Japan, especially through martial arts like Kobudo and Karate, its origins are likely influenced by earlier tools or weapons from China, India, or Southeast Asia.
- The Sai is a trident-like weapon. It has a long central prong (the monouchi) flanked by two shorter side prongs (the yoku) that curve outward.
Despite its appearance, the Sai is not a blade—the central prong is typically blunt, and it functions as a defensive and trapping weapon, not primarily for stabbing or cutting.
Primary uses:
- Blocking and parrying attacks (especially swords or staffs)
- Trapping and disarming weapons using the side prongs
- Striking with the butt or shaft
- Sometimes thrown (though not commonly in formal martial arts)
This particular Sai is made from 5160 steel, coated with DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) and a ceramic finish. It uses a three-zone segmented heat treatment process:
- Inner layer (pyramid core): 58–60 HRC
- Outer layer: 54–55 HRC
- Guard: approx. 55 HRC
