Alamo Defenders Brown Bess
Some Alamo defenders, including David Crockett, are believed to have used percussion rifles, like the Pennsylvania Rifle, & others like the Brown Bess rather than flintlock muskets.
The remains from the Battle of the Alamo were picked up by the locals and this was one gun we think. Twisted barrel with a broken forearm! The Bess was a Gunsmith conversion not a factory conversion -Pieces was saved and a small Calvary Carbine rifle was the remains left over. The record of the guns History is that a young Confederate horseman rode it in to the “Battle of Brownsville” his great- great grandson parted with it to me. Under the command of “Brigadier General John S. Marmaduke” (1300) Confederate cavalrymen around August 1863 went in to battle. The battle saw the capture of Brownsville by the “Union forces”. So much for a “History Lesson”. It has been such a cherish favorite of mine for years just to think one of the men with this gun may have stood beside Davy!
