The history of the Cooey rifles plays an interesting role in Canadian industry.  Herbert Cooey produced these rifles, apparently advertised as the "boys rifle," listed in the HBC catalogs.  During the Second World War, faced with a shortage of Lee Enfield rifles, Mr Cooey produced thousands of "Cooey copies" of the Lee Enfield rifle, chambered in .22 for rifle and range training for the Canadian Army.

This particular model listed for sale, was manufactured in the Coborg Ontario plant after Winchester had bought shares in the company in 1961 after Mr Herbert Cooey passed away.

The son, "Cooey Junior" couldn't hack the established business and closed the doors permanently a few years later, contributing to an era of decline in Canadian machining and manufacturing.  Collapsing to the mighty dollar of the American businessman during the late 60s - early 70s.

A similar (although more modern) version of this rifle is now developed by Savage Arms Canada.
