Up for sale is a beautiful, highly collectible 1948-manufactured Winchester Model 70 "Pre-64" Standard Rifle chambered in the legendary .30-06 Springfield. For serious riflemen, the late 1940s represents the absolute pinnacle of Winchester’s craftsmanship, combining the definitive controlled-round feed action with the superb fit and finish of the early post-war era.

This rifle is a phenomenal shooter that outpaces many modern precision rigs when fed quality ammunition.

Component & Build Details:

  • Action: Iconic Pre-64 action with the correct early safety, smooth bolt cycling, and flawless controlled-round feeding.
  • Caliber: .30-06 Springfield
  • Stock: Original walnut stock featuring a beautiful original finish that shows honest, light character from careful use. This was the very rare smooth-surface stock.
  • Optic Setup: Paired perfectly with a period-correct, vintage Redfield 2X-7X variable scope featuring a classic gloss finish. It is securely mounted on a solid, traditional steel base and ring set that perfectly complements the lines of the receiver.
  • Iron Sights: Retains its original factory front sight hood and rear sight assembly intact.

Performance & Accuracy:

If you believe vintage hunting rifles can't hunt small groups, this rifle proves otherwise. The barrel still has incredible life and exceptional geometry.

  • The Proof: Included in the images is a fresh 4-shot group fired recently at 100 yards. The far-right shows the cold bore.
  • The Load: This group was achieved using a classic handload: Hornady 150-grain bullets pushed by 48.0 grains of IMR 4064.
  • Results: Four rounds with a slight, predictable cold bore opening, totalling a 4-shot spread to just over an inch (sub-MOA for the cluster). The cold bore shot ("CB") is clearly marked.

Condition:

The bluing on the barrel and receiver is in excellent vintage condition, showing only mild, authentic wear on the high edges and traditional thinning near the floorplate from honest field carry. No modern modifications, no extra drilled holes, and the stock has not been cut for a modern recoil pad—just pure, unaltered American rifle-making history. PAL is a must, and I can ship anywhere in Canada.
